Week 38

PRINCIPAL's MESSAGE

Dear Dickson Star Families ⭐,

We have officially reached the final week of the school year! This week is filled with many special moments, including awards ceremonies, classroom celebrations, promotion activities, and end-of-year events as we celebrate all of the growth and accomplishments of our students.

Please take time to carefully read the entire newsletter, your child’s teacher messages, and all ParentSquare reminders so you do not miss important dates, times, and event details. There are many exciting activities happening throughout the week!

⏰ Please also remember:

  • Wednesday, May 20 – Minimum Day
  • Thursday, May 21 – Minimum Day & LAST DAY OF SCHOOL

We look forward to celebrating these exciting milestones with our students and families as we finish another wonderful school year together.

As we head into summer, we encourage all families to take time to relax, recharge, and enjoy time together. While summer is an important time for fun and family memories, it is also important for students to continue practicing foundational skills to help keep their minds fresh for the new school year. Simple activities like reading daily, practicing writing, reviewing math facts, or even playing educational games during car rides can make a big difference in helping students maintain their learning over the summer months.

Thank you for your continued support, partnership, and involvement throughout this school year. It has been a wonderful year of learning, growth, and celebration for our Dickson Stars. We wish all of our families a safe, restful, and joyful summer break!

6th Grade PROMOTION and Information

Dear 6th Grade Families,

We are excited to celebrate our 6th grade students during Promotion on Wednesday, May 20, 2026 at 8:15 AM.

The ceremony will be held at our outside stage area. We choose to hold Promotion outside so we can accommodate more family members and guests. If the ceremony were held indoors, we would need to limit attendance.

Important Information for the Ceremony:

• Families will be allowed onto campus beginning around 8:00 AM.

• The ceremony will begin promptly at 8:15 AM.

• There will be approximately 200 chairs available, along with plenty of standing room.

• Please arrive early to allow enough time to find appropriate and legal parking and line up at the entrance gate behind the front office.

Please remember that this is also arrival time for all students on campus. We ask that everyone be respectful and mindful of the many cars, students, and families arriving safely for the school day.

To help make the ceremony enjoyable for everyone:

• Please do NOT bring noise-making devices, as we have students and families who may have sensitivities.

• Balloons are welcome; however, they must be checked into our balloon check-in room so they do not block the view of other families.

• No animals are allowed on campus without prior approval/clearance from Principal McCain.

PTA will also be selling items before the ceremony, including coffee, water, cookies, cake pops, and graduation-themed items.

After the ceremony, teachers will take students back to their classrooms to collect their belongings and then return them to the outside stage area for pictures with families.

We understand many families may wish to celebrate with lunch or other activities afterward. If you plan to check your student out early, there will be a checkout table near the exit. Families are encouraged to sign students out while they are with their teachers gathering classroom belongings.

Due to the size and activity of this event, all staff members will be focused on ensuring the safety of students and guests on campus. Staff may not be able to pull other students out of class in a timely manner, so we appreciate your patience and planning ahead.

We look forward to celebrating this special milestone with all of our 6th grade students and families!

As we move closer to the end of the school year, we are excited about the many activities planned to celebrate our 6th grade students and this important milestone. These events are meant to recognize their hard work and create lasting memories as they prepare for junior high.

Below are the upcoming 6th grade events:

  • Ongoing: Accepting Donations for 6th Grade Activities
  • May 18: 11:00 a.m. 6th Grade BBQ | 1:00 p.m. 6th Grade Kickball Game
  • May 19: 6th Grade Glow Dance – Immediately After School
  • May 20: 6th Grade Promotion – 8:15 a.m.
  • May 21: Optional Knott’s Berry Farm Trip (Additional cost – after school hours)

If you need any assistance, have questions, or would like to make donation, please feel free to reach out to Mrs. McCain.

Reminder: 7th graders are required to have a Tdap immunization on file before starting junior high.

Dear 6th Grade Families,

This is a friendly reminder that students entering 7th grade are required to have a Tdap immunization on file before starting junior high.

To help make the transition to junior high as smooth as possible, we encourage families to submit proof of the Tdap immunization before the end of the school year. If documentation is turned in to the Dickson Health Office now, our staff will enter it into the system so it is already completed for next year—one less thing for families to worry about over the summer.

Please note that students who do not have proof of the Tdap immunization on file may experience a delay in starting their first day of school in 7th grade.

You may bring a copy of your child’s immunization record to the Dickson Health Office or send it with your student to school.
Thank you for helping us ensure a smooth start to the next school year!

Sincerely,
Dickson Elementary

Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow

5 minutes late or early out = 15 hours of missed instruction

10 minutes late or early out = 30 hours of missed instruction

Importance of Attendance

Regular school attendance is crucial for children's future success. A strong academic foundation helps students excel and achieve their goals. Attending class every day is key to mastering grade-level skills and graduating high school.

School Schedule

School starts daily at 7:50 a.m., so students should be seated and ready for instruction. To help, we offer breakfast and supervision from 7:10 - 7:40 a.m., when traffic is light.

Attendance Matters

Please make illness the only reason for absences. Missing school means missing important lessons, and catching up can be challenging. Last year, Dickson's attendance rate was 93%. Our goal is to reach a 96.5% attendance rate. This year’s campaign is ATTEND TODAY, ACHIEVE TOMORROW! The school with the highest attendance in each feeder group will win a trophy and a pizza party from the District!

Classroom Competitions

We will also have weekly attendance competitions in classrooms. Students with absences or tardies will be invited to attend Saturday School. Families with excessive absences (10%), tardies, or leaving early will be asked to attend a SART Meeting (School Attendance Review Team) with school administration to discuss how we can provide support.

How You Can Help

Healthy school attendance is a team effort. Here’s how you can support:

  • Prepare: Get lunches, bookbags, and outfits ready the night before.

  • Schedule: Plan medical visits after school hours.

  • Plan: Arrange family activities when school is not in session.

  • Limit Absences: Only keep your child home if they have a contagious illness or have a fever over 101°.

  • Communicate: Talk to your child about their feelings about school.

  • Inform: Share the importance of consistent attendance.

  • Reach Out: Contact teachers or staff for assistance.

With your support, we can achieve the attendance goal of 96.5% and help students build confidence, friendships, academic skills, and life skills.

Let's Prioritize Attendance!

If you're facing any challenges, please let us know how we can help.

Reminder:

If students arrive after the 7:50 a.m. bell, please sign them in. This ensures accurate attendance records. Students arriving late will be marked tardy, regardless of their entry point. We welcome every student warmly, but we want them to get every minute of learning!

CLICK HERE to REPORT an ABSENCE through Parent Square or call (909) 591-2653

Reminders

  • Breakfast is available from 7:10 - 7:40 every morning. If a bus is late, breakfast is still available to the students that rode the bus that day.
  • Food sharing is not allowed for multiple reasons, but most importantly for safety, including allergies. Sending healthy snacks and food helps student focus and have optimal performance.
  • All devices: (cell phones, smart watches, iPads..) must be off and out of sight while on school campus. If your child needs to contact you, they can ask their teacher or the office for assistance. If you need to contact your child, you may leave a message in the office and it will be provided during a break.
  • Dress Code: The weather is very warm, so please review our dress code policy to be sure your child is wearing approved school appropriate clothing. (Frequent topics: Clothing is expected to covered shoulders to mid-thigh with no skin or undergarments showing. Shoes must be worn with back straps on at all times. Make-up is not allowed.)
  • PE and Recess: Back straps on crocks have been ripping easily. Please send your child to school with study shoes to help keep them safe. If you need assistance in getting sturdier shoes, please let Administrators know and we would be happy to help.
  • Lost & Found: Please write your child's name on everything they bring to school. Their lunch pails, water bottles, jackets, sweaters, etc... Many items get misplaced and staff has to put unlabeled items in the lost and found, often going unclaimed.

The Tier 1 team represents multiple and diverse perspectives to co-create the systems and practices for Tier 1 support. This team is responsible for uncovering strengths and needs by monitoring school and community data, ensuring students receive equitable access to these supports, and evaluating overall effectiveness.

 PBIS Tier 1 Team:

Veronica Garcia, MTSS-B Counselor

Renae McCain, Principal

Kristin McConnell, Teacher

Brit Bedolla, Teacher

Sandra Noon, Parent

Tier 2 supports refers to the practices and systems that enable targeted interventions for students who are not successful with Tier 1 supports alone. The focus at Tier 2 is supporting students who are at risk for developing more serious unwanted behaviors before they start. Essentially, intervention at this level is more targeted than Tier 1 but less intensive than Tier 3. The Tier 2 team meets regularly to design and refine Tier 2 interventions within the building to meet the needs of their students. The team is responsible for the student referral process related to interventions. The team also provides training to families, school personnel, and students regarding interventions. The Tier 2 Team may include someone to coordinate each Tier 2 intervention, a school administrator, a behavior specialist, and classroom teachers. Schools are also encouraged to consider community and family members.

Tier 3 team membership includes an administrator, a coach/behavior representative, others with basic knowledge of problem solving. Team members should also include personnel who actively provide Tier 3 support in the school. This gives them input on decisions about interventions they provide to students they serve. Including school personnel from different departments ensures an array of perspectives.

PBIS Tier 2 & 3 Team:

Veronica Garcia, MTSS-B Counselor

Celina Sedillo, Assistant Principal

Kathryn Kertesz, Academic Intervention Teacher

Claudia Castro, RSP Teacher

Marilu Foss, School Psychologist

Amanda Dayhoff, Behavior Health Associate

Priscilla Sosa, Behavior Health Counselor

Drop Off & Pick Up Procedures

Traffic Safety Reminder for Drop-Off and Pick-Up

We kindly ask for your help in ensuring a safe environment during drop-off and pick-up times. Please adhere to all traffic laws, posted signs, and staff instructions. Every individual's cooperation is essential in creating a safer environment. While I understand that many adults may be in a hurry, it is imperative that we prioritize safety above all else.

Key Points:

  • Safety First: Adult behaviors during arrival and dismissal can impact student safety. Please prioritize safety over speed, even when in a hurry.

  • Drop-Off Guidelines:

    • Follow the signs to the designated drop-off area.
    • Pull up as far as possible to accommodate more cars and help students enter and exit efficiently.
  • Important Safety Reminders:

    • Children must not exit vehicles in the parking lot. Please park and walk your child across the designated crosswalk.
    • Drive slowly and attentively in the parking lot. Stay vigilant and cautious.
  • Crosswalk Usage:

    • Always use the crosswalk and set a positive example for our students.
    • Do not stop or park along the red-painted curbs on Roswell Street, as these are for emergency vehicles.

By working together and following these safety practices, we can enhance student safety and improve traffic flow.

Thank you for your attention and cooperation. The drop-off and pick-up procedures are available below and on the Dickson Website.

We appreciate families who:

  • Pull up to the curb, allowing more cars and ensuring safe student entry and exit.
  • Park in visitor spots and accompany their children across the parking lot safely.

Arrival and Dismissal Tips:

  • Arrive between 7:10-7:40 to avoid the 7:40-7:50 traffic.
  • The best options are to walk from home or drive through the drop-off/pick-up line.
  • Do not stop in the middle of any street or at red/yellow curbs.
  • Be respectful of neighbors by keeping mailboxes and driveways accessible.
  • Cross at the stop sign with the crossing guard to ensure safety.

Parking Policy:

  • Parking spots are designated for staff and visitors. Please avoid blocking staff parking.

Thank you for your continued commitment to safety! Please review the arrival and dismissal map and share these guidelines with anyone picking up your child.

If you have any questions, feel free to call the office.

PTA | Parent Teacher Association

A Heartfelt Thank You to Our PTA Board and Volunteers

We want to take a moment to express our deep gratitude to our incredible PTA Board and the many volunteers who support our school community. Often, the hard work and dedication of our parent and staff volunteers go unrecognized, and we want to shine a light on the amazing contributions they make.

Every member of our PTA, including the board members, is a volunteer, and we encourage more families to get involved. The more volunteers we have, the more wonderful events we can bring to the Dickson community.

As Bill Richardson wisely said, "We cannot accomplish all that we need to do without working together." Let's continue to work hand in hand to create memorable experiences for our children and families!

The Dickson PTA plays a vital role in planning, organizing, and executing a variety of enriching activities for our students and families, including:

  • Testing Kick off Color Fun Run
  • Decorations for the 5th Grade are Graduation
  • Organizing, ordering, and fulfilling Spirit Wear
  • Hosting the PTA Membership Drive
  • Running After School Snack Cart Concessions on Wednesdays
  • Managing the Birthday Marquee funds
  • Conducting Fundraising efforts (Thinknlocal, Pacific, Otis Spunkmeyer, See's Candy, Family Dinner Nights, etc.)
  • Organizing Trunk or Treat - Family Night
  • Coordinating Buddy Pictures
  • Helping with Yearbook Sales
  • Conducting Clothing Drives
  • Organizing the volunteers for the Book Fair
  • Organizing the Fun Run
  • Planning Starchella - Family Dance
  • Supporting 6th Grade Activities
  • Creating decor like Balloon Arches, Banners, etc... for events
  • Purchasing and dispersing student treats for Spirit Wear and Attendance Winners
  • And much much more!

Meet your 2025-26 PTA Board

Anyone can join PTA at any time! There is no mandatory commitment, participate any way that you are able. Please contact a PTA Board Member or the school office for more information.

Wednesday, PTA Snack Cart - Always looking for more help!

The PTA volunteers generously give their time selling snacks after school on Wednesdays. All proceeds go directly back to our students.

  • All students are expected to wait respectfully in line.
  • Only students with money may stand in line for a snack. All students without money must exit campus to wait for their ride home.
  • Families may not park or wait on the drive through curb for their child to get a snack. Please find a place to park so you do not hold up traffic for families that need to pick up and leave.
  • Bus riders MUST go straight to the bus. The bus is on a schedule and is not allowed to wait. We give reminders that all Bus riders must go straight to the bus.
  • SOAR students are required to check in with SOAR immediately after school. Soar staff members will walk students with money over to the PTA snack cart.

PTA MEMBERSHIP DRIVE

PTA continues to accepts PTA Memberships throughout the year. Every membership makes a difference and supports students directly.

Every class that has 100% PTA Memberships will earn an Ice Cream Party! Families are welcome to donate and/or sponsor memberships for their child’s class as well.

If you pay for anything via Zelle, make sure you type your student’s name, teacher and reason for payment to ensure PTA aligns your payment correctly. Payments with no memo/note may go into overall donations.

SPIRIT WEAR

We wear our Dickson Spirit Wear every Friday! Classes with the highest participation win a prize.
